Three points, in the end! After a poor display for the first hour of the game, goals from James Chester and Scott Hogan handed Villa another win on the road.

The first half at the DW was very stop-start. This came from a combination of cheap fouls and neither team looking comfortable in possession. Villa struggled to string more than 3 passes together and looked creatively barren. It was Wigan, and in particular Omar Bogle, that looked most lively. In truth, however, Wigan’s best chance came from a Villa mistake. A defensive mix up between Jedinak and Johnstone allowed Bogle to nip in between the pair, but his shot hit the side netting.

The second half started much the same, which prompted Bruce to make a double substitution. The return of Hogan and Lansbury added a little spark to Villa’s game and we started to have a bit more of the ball in the attacking third. This culminated in Chester bundling home a corner to give Villa the lead. Scrappy, but a goal is a goal!

Hogan’s header, that wrapped up the victory, was far more clinical. He’d been a menace to the opposition defence when he came on, and got his just rewards. The ball was stood up from the right hand side, and Hogan calmly placed a header past the keeper into the bottom corner. It’s fantastic to see Scott Hogan get off the mark for his new club, a big moment for any player but a striker in particular. It’ll hopefully do wonders for his confidence considering he’s only just come back from injury too.

Ultimately, it must be said that this wasn’t a stellar performance. The important thing, however, is that Villa leave the North West with three more points. A word on the fans, brilliant once again.¬†Almost 5000 Villans made the trip to the DW and gave it their all throughout the game.
